IIG holds a 27 October walk-in for four JRFs and one Research Associate
IIG is recruiting project researchers for lightning, atmosphere–ionosphere and planetary-space studies. The common walk-in takes place at New Panvel, even where the eventual work location is Prayagraj or Colaba.

Five project posts across four research entries
IIG's common walk-in covers two L-ATMIC Junior Research Fellows, one L-ATMIC Research Associate, one satellite-data JRF and one Venus–solar-wind JRF. The common interview is in New Panvel, but the eventual work sites include New Panvel, Prayagraj and Colaba. These are temporary project appointments, distinct from the institute's separate regular academic recruitment. Choose the research entry by its subject and essential qualification rather than the shared JRF title alone.
L-ATMIC Junior Research Fellow eligibility
The two L-ATMIC JRF positions require an MSc in Physics, Atmospheric Science or Space Science with at least 55% or equivalent CGPA from a recognized institution. Python, MATLAB, IDL or similar scientific programming and data-analysis skills are desirable. Candidates should be willing to undertake laboratory and field observations. One position is based at IIG headquarters in New Panvel and the other at KSKGRL Prayagraj, making location flexibility relevant before attending.
What the lightning project involves
L-ATMIC researchers study lightning over the Indian subcontinent and its connections with convection, cyclones and atmosphere–ionosphere coupling. JRF duties include helping install, operate and maintain ground experiments, collecting observations and processing optical, radio, lightning and satellite datasets. Researchers also visualise results, interpret measurements and contribute to publications and project deliverables. The work therefore combines observational operations and research analysis, rather than data entry alone.
Research Associate requirements and work
The Associate requires a PhD in Physics, Atmospheric Science or Space Science. Relevant atmosphere–ionosphere coupling or aeronomy experience is preferred, alongside time-series, image-processing, statistical and large-geophysical-dataset skills. The work includes advanced analysis, developing modelling approaches, guiding JRF analysis and contributing to research outputs and proposals. The work location is New Panvel/Prayagraj. A postgraduate degree suitable for a JRF does not satisfy the Associate's doctoral requirement.
Other JRF routes
The Colaba JRF needs a master's in Physics, Space Physics or Atmospheric Sciences plus a valid national eligibility qualification such as NET/GATE or an accepted equivalent central-government examination. Scientific-data formats including CDF, NetCDF, ASCII and CSV are relevant. The Venus–solar-wind JRF accepts the specified physics, meteorology or planetary/space-science MSc/MS/ME/MTech routes and NET including lectureship, GATE or JEST. Space-based analysis and MATLAB/Python are desirable for that project.
Stipends and age
L-ATMIC JRFs receive ₹37,000 monthly with an accepted national qualification or ₹31,000 without it. The other JRFs receive ₹37,000 and the Associate ₹58,000, with admissible HRA if accommodation is not supplied. The ordinary upper age is 28 for JRF and 35 for Research Associate. Listed relaxations include five years for SC/ST, three for OBC and ten for PwBD. Check the appropriate category and project row rather than assuming the lower L-ATMIC test requirement applies to every JRF.
Walk-in and document preparation
Report to IIG headquarters, Plot 5, Sector 18, Kalamboli Highway, New Panvel on 27 October 2026 at 10 am. Bring the completed prescribed application, original qualifications, date-of-birth and identity records, experience and category documents where relevant, and a self-attested copy set. Final-year candidates awaiting results are ineligible. Travel and accommodation must be arranged by the applicant; an eventual posting at Colaba or Prayagraj does not change the interview venue.
Research-focused preparation
Application guidance: prepare one reproducible example of data cleaning, scientific plotting, signal analysis or observational work relevant to the selected project. For the Associate, make your analytical contribution and mentoring record clear. Distinguish a preferred programming skill from a required degree or national qualification. Recheck the institute's Careers page before travel for revised instructions, and keep your submitted contact information active for recruitment communication.
